Tribal People of the Earth
This Sand painting was literally a collection of the smooth powdery river sand of New Mexico that I used integratively with acrylics to conjoin the textures of this painting.
Grinding the Earth minerals on an ancient Artifact like the traditional Metate stone, once used by my ancestors for grinding corn and grains, is what I use today to adhere layers upon layers of this magnificent ground Earth, for the intention of recreating the original designs of the Indigenous pots used for daily living in the Tarahumara culture. When I attune into the steps it takes to process these sand art pieces, I think about what it must have been like for my ancestors when they were gathering their foods and collecting the tools necessary for cooking these meals. I love filling my senses with the aroma of the ground minerals when they are moistened with the adhesive that binds them all together to create the different layers and textures. Incredibly and not surprisingly, the Earth minerals are quite forgiving during the process of these designs.
